Vinje kommune
Vinje is the largest municipality in the county of Telemark, covering an area of 3,117 km2. It is a typical mountain district, with 80 per cent of the area more than 800 metres above sea level. Vinje is situated in the northwestern corner of Telemark, bordering the counties of Aust-Agder, Rogaland and Hordaland to the south and west and the county of Buskerud to the north. To the east, Vinje borders the municipalities of Tinn, Seljord and Tokke.

Vinje district includes plenty of open spaces for outdoor recreation, the Hardangervidda plateau being the largest and most famous. Hwy E134 from Drammen to Haugesund via Haukelifjell makes Hardangervidda one of the most accessible mountain areas in Norway. Here you can hike on waymarked trails, go riding, fish in clear mountain lakes, hunt small game and enjoy a variety of exciting activities for people of all ages. In the winter, Rauland and Haukeli offer fantastic skiing for young and old alike, whether on the downhill slopes, the many miles of groomed cross-country trails, or at Norway’s largest tobogganing centre at Vierli.

Vinje is also famous for its many authors, artists and musicians. If you take a circular tour of Vinje, you can stop off at the many museums and preserved farmsteads that keep alive the cultural heritage of which we are so proud. The wide variety of accommodation, retail and service businesses will provide you with a complete vacation experience. Please contact the local tourist information centres if you need ideas for car trips or things to do, or if you would like to book accommodation and activities. We hope you will find what you are looking for, and to see you again soon.
